Darlot People's Country

On 5 July 2022, the Federal Court of Australia handed down the Darlot native title consent determination over an area in the northern Goldfields Region bounded by the Tjiwarl and Kultju determinations of native title to the north-west and north. The Darlot determination recognises the non-exclusive native title rights over a 21,622 square-kilometre area, which includes the historic mining towns of Menzies and Leonora. The native title holders, the Darlot People, are the descendants of about 20 ancestors who take their name from the ephemeral Lake Darlot. The lake spans the claim area, extending from Leinster in the west to Laverton in the east.

The Watarra Aboriginal Corporation or WTAC (ICN 9712) is the Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) that holds the determined native title in trust for the native title holders.

Darlot Trust Advisory Committee (TAC)

The Darlot Trust Advisory Committee (TAC) presently mirrors the Watarra Aboriginal Corporation Directors Board. The TAC members work closely with the Trustee. The same persons who make up the Darlot Charitable Trust TAC will also serve on the separate TAC for the Darlot Direct Benefits Trust.

The primary role of the Advisory Committee is to represent the Darlot common law holders of native title. The Committee provides a channel between the trustee and the Darlot beneficiaries. The Committee addresses any matters for which the Trust Deeds assign them as responsible for advising, recommending, or approving.

Engaging with TAC

The TAC typically meets six times a year. If you would like something raised on the agenda, you can reach out to any of the TAC members individually or complete the Trust Feedback Form via the Custodian Community app on your phone.
